Report: Ex-Westchester Teacher Busted For Sexually Abusing Students Spends Weekends In Jail

The former Westchester high school drama teacher who resigned in shame and registered as a sex offender after admitting to sexually abusing students is spending his weekends in jail for violating his probation, according to a lohud report.

Schraufnagel served as a drama teacher at Horace Greeley from 2003 until his resignation in 2015. He was accused of having sexual contact with three high school students over a four-year span and several others have come forward since.

Last year, Schraufnagel was assigned a Level 3 sex offender status, which means he is a “high risk of repeat offense, and a threat to public safety exists.” He was initially sentenced to three years probation with sex offender conditions that include work and residency restrictions, as well as sex offender treatment.

Since narrowly avoiding jail time when he was initially sentenced, Schraufnagel was ordered to spend weekends in jail after taking a job as a bartender in Armonk, violating the terms of his probation, according to lohud. He also allegedly used his married name, Chris Evers, leading to a judge in New Castle to order him to spend four weekends in jail earlier this month.

Criminal allegations against Schraufnagel include acts of oral sex with a 15-year-old student and unspecified sexual contact and conversations with another. He was also accused of asking a student to kiss a group of classmates for a photo slideshow. Several other students came forward with civil lawsuits after the initial claims against the former educator.

Allegations against Schraufnagel came to light in June 2015 and he resigned the following September. Schraufnagel was levied with criminal sex-abuse charged in October that year.

When school started earlier this month, flyers began cropping up around Horace Greeley High School, lambasting Schraufnagel and the school district that once employed him. There are still seven pending lawsuits against the former educator and the Chappaqua Central School District.

David Engelsher, an attorney from the Law Office of William A.Gallina, representing four families whose children were sexually abused by Schaufnagel issued a statement regarding the former educator's parole violations.

"Christopher Schraufnagel's recent acts of defiance of the terms of his probation show his total disregard for authority. This is not new," he said. "This character flaw should have been evident to the administration and school board and should have alerted them to has pedophilia. Had they been paying attention, these children would not have been seriously and permanently injured."

In a statement last year, Schaufnagel apologized to his victims and the Chappaqua community during an appearance in New Castle Town Court, expressing his “continual” remorse for his victims. In his statement, he said, as an adult, he should have known better than to cross the line with students.
